CROMWELL — A runaway golf cart at the Travelers Championship is getting national attention.

The cart, which had no one in it, went careening around the course near the 16th hole on the opening day of the tournament Thursday, climbing hills and picking up speed before nosediving front-first into a pond.

A course worker appeared to try to stop it, but it was going too fast.

The cart crash “is a first,” a Golfweek post declared.

Besides Golfweek, a video clip of the minor mishap was picked up by Barstool Sports, For the Win, Nine’s Wide World of Sports and CBS, among other national media outlets.

No one was seriously injured in the incident, which Katie Reilly, tournament media manager, described as “an accident.” She didn’t elaborate.

The golf cart has been recovered from the pond, she said.
