EDWARDSVILLE — Shining in the late afternoon sun, Anderson Hospital, in conjunction with area chambers of commerce, welcomed visitors to its newest Goshen Campus addition Thursday, the Anderson Goshen Medical Building.

Comprising 50,000 square feet over two stories and located across District Drive from Liberty Middle School, the building had a soft opening on June 30 for a small group of executives, including Anderson Healthcare staff, board members, volunteers and other special guests. The building opened for ExpressCare outpatient services on July 7 and began seeing patients on July 11. Rehabilitation Therapy and Lab Services also opened that day.

According to Lori Bruggemann, a patient accounts manager, the first floor of the new facility replaces the former Express Care Ginger Creek location in Glen Carbon, which closed July 5. Other areas of the first floor include physical therapy and at least one laboratory.

Bruggemann was one of many staff members who gave small-group tours of the new building, which is heavily adorned in wood laminate, stone, tile and other materials designed to be less sterile and clinical than a typical hospital from 30 or 40 years ago.

"We currently have 16 providers, with two more joining us Monday," Bruggemann said as she led the group of five people, including an Intelligencer reporter, upstairs. On the next floor were primary care physician offices, internal medicine and ear-nose-and-throat disciplines.

"We merged five practices into one here," Bruggemann said before leading the group past several telemedicine consulting rooms, which became popular during the pandemic.

The building has about 55 examination rooms total and uses a three-way hallway labeling system, 5A, 10B or 13C, for example. The exam rooms are spacious and are connected to the providers' work areas. Patients are typically seen between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Between the patient and the provider are those referred to as middle-levels, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. One new feature is a room full of patient support providers. There are consultation rooms, including at least one large enough for family members to gather.

Goshen Imaging, an affiliate of Maryville Imaging, is planned to open at the site this fall. It is subject to compliance approval with several agencies prior to opening.

The project, approximately $20 million, was developed by Triple Net Management. Triple Net Management is led by Terry Johnson, a veteran commercial real estate broker and developer with 35 years of experience in office, retail, investment, and land sales. The building was designed and built by The Korte Company.

The Outpatient Services building joins two other buildings located on the Goshen Campus. The Anderson Surgery Center opened in 2020. The one-story building is anchored by Anderson Surgery Center and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital Specialty Clinic. In addition, the facility houses a Physician Specialists timeshare suite and limited outpatient services from Anderson Hospital including Lab, X-Ray and Audiology.

In 2021, the Goshen Campus welcomed the Anderson Rehabilitation Institute. This 34-bed acute rehabilitation institute is managed by LifePoint Health (formerly Kindred Healthcare, LLC), and specializes in caring for adults recovering from conditions resulting in a loss of function or disability such as stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurological disorders, orthopedic or musculoskeletal conditions, amputation and other disabling conditions. The institute features all private rooms, with 12 beds specific to brain/stroke injury care. The institute replaced the 20-bed hospital-based acute rehab unit that had been inside Anderson Hospital since 2004.

Despite previous reports and more vacant space at the site, Anderson Hospital officials say there are no plans at this time for a fourth building on the site. The new medical building's address is 3417 Anderson Healthcare Drive.
